In 1991, the School of Engineering and the Department of Physics merged their individual shops to create what is now called the Joint Engineering & Physics Instrument Shop (JEPIS). JEPIS is administered by IMNI and operates as a non-profit cost center, charging an hourly fee for labor plus materials used to defer operational expenses.
JEPIS is available to all Brown University departments as well as external institutions and organizations. JEPIS offers all of the basic machine shop capabilities with the addition of CNC design consultation. The JEPIS staff can provide assistance in the develepment of research projects, repairs to equipment, and sourcing the required materials. JEPIS also offers hand-on training and instruction through non-credit basic and advanced machine shop courses.
