Mission: To advance heart regeneration & health

Millions of people around the globe suffer from heart disease, including heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), and poor blood flow.  We engineer better heart health through understanding the cellular, tissue, and organ level functions that guide development, regeneration, and repair.  We leverage stem cell biology, tissue engineering, mechanics, biomaterials, and other technologies to develop in vitro cardiac tissues to assess chemical-induced toxicity and arrhythmias and re-engineer vascularization, excitation, and contractility of the heart muscle.  

Our work has advanced cardiac regenerative medicine by increaseing our understanding of the growth and maturation of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes, cell-matrix interactions in 3D engineered cardiac tissue, and mechanical properties of engineered cardiac scaffolds and tissues.  We have created technologies for arrhythmic risk assessment of pharmaceutical and environmental chemical compounds and heart remuscularization and revascularization through engineered biomaterials and tissues to accomplish our mission of advancing heart regeneration and health.
