Humanities Research Funds Guidelines
2017-2018 Academic Year

The Office of Vice President for Research (OVPR) awards Humanities Research Funds (HRFs) to support faculty research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, where external funding opportunities may be limited. The annual pool of available HRF funds is determined by each department roster and $900 is allocated for each eligible faculty member.

As HRFs are a merit-based award it is anticipated that the awarded amounts may be greater or lesser than the $900, depending upon the scope and merit of a proposed project. However, in no instance will the awarded amount exceed $1800 per eligible faculty member.

Note: If a full-time faculty member has a 0.5 appointment in each of two departments, the faculty member may apply for up to $900 from each department. However, eligible faculty members with joint appointments should check with the chairs in their respective departments to determine how the HRF request will be allocated and administered.

Eligible HRF expenses include, but are not limited to, travel to research conferences or archives, preparation of manuscripts and articles, and securing permissions. All expenditures under this program must be in accordance with University policies and procedures.*

All eligible tenure or tenure-track faculty or senior lecturers active in research may apply for HRFs. Adjunct, emeritus, and visiting faculty members are not eligible to apply.

Amount and Duration of Awards
Awards can be up to a maximum of $1,800 per faculty member and the total amount awarded is dependent upon the available funding in a department. Funds are available for use beginning December 15, 2017 and eligible expenditures may continue through June 30, 2019.

Proposal Funding Requests and Processing
OVPR will inform department chairs of the total available amount of Humanities Research Funds for their departments in September of each academic year. Department chairs will then solicit from eligible faculty a brief written proposal for use of Humanities Research Funds. Upon review of each proposal, the chair will, based upon the merit of each proposal, determine the award amount for each applicant.

Preliminary funding requests to OVPR should be submitted to by the department chair by the end of business on Wednesday, November 15, 2017. HRF requests should summarize the allocation process used, the faculty members to whom awards will be distributed, the amount of the award, and a brief description of the projects that have been proposed. Chair Final Reports regarding disposition of HRFs should include a one-paragraph synopses of each funded project. Chair Final Reports are due to OVPR by the end of business on August 30, 2019.

*Please note that supplies/equipment/services purchased with these Humanities Research Funds must be received by the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2019) and travel must also have been completed by that date in order to be charged against the award.
