Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Brown University holds a PHS Animal Welfare Assurance, is registered as a research facility with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is fully accredited by AAALAC International.


Brown University adheres to the “U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training”, “PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”, “USDA: Animal Welfare Act & Regulations”, and “the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”.


The primary function of the IACUC is to assist faculty, students and staff in upholding Brown University's determination to ensure the finest care and most humane utilization of our laboratory animals. To this end, every research, testing, and teaching project involving the use of live vertebrate animals must be reviewed and approved by the IACUC prior to initiation.




  • Administrative functions are conducted out of the Office of Research Integrity (ORI).
  • Animal use applications and renewals need to be completed and submitted in Coeus.
  • Generally allow at least 4 weeks for protocol review. In some instances, review time may be extended.
  • Please address administrative questions to the IACUC  Coordinator.
  • Please address questions regarding animal care to the Director of Animal Care.
  • The campus veterinarians have their offices in the Animal Care Facility office in the BioMedical Center and are available for consultation and assistance on animal care and experimental questions.
