Brown University Superfund Research Program co-sponsored a conference with Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society’s Delta Upsilon Chapter-at-Large on October 26, 2013. The half-day conference entitled, Is It Genetics or Is It Environmental? featured presentations by Marcella Remer Thompson, the Program’s State Agencies and Community Liaison, and John McGeary, Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology and Genetics. Dr. Thompson examined the state of genetics and epigenetic science with respect to maternal exposures to environmental hazards. Dr. McGeary described how genomics is transforming the approach and treatment of addiction. He discussed the impact of this revolution of diagnosis and treatment on nursing practice. Both presenters emphasized that gene-environment interactions present a significant challenge due to the complex biological interplay of genetic susceptibilities and adaptive responses to environmental hazards. Thirty-seven members and nursing students received 2.5 hours of continuing education credit.
