I’ve done research, now what?
Research
You can present your findings in many different formats in various places:
- The Brown chapter of Sigma Xi sponsors an event called Scialogue during which undergraduate students can present their projects to a group of peers or a panel of graduate students for feedback. Visit the Scialogue site for more information.
- Departments usually hold poster sessions either in the spring or in the fall. Direct all inquires about specific dates and registration to your advisor or the department in which you’re carrying out your research. If you’re continuing your research throughout the summer, you can register to present at the Summer Research Symposium, an event during which nearly 200 Brown and visiting students present their findings.
- Sigma Xi society hosts the Student Research Showcase in the spring semester. Pre-approval is necessary to present. This event is unique in that it asks participants to create a website about their research—a virtual poster presentation of sorts. Two Brown students have participated in the 2013 showcase:
- Michael Yanagisawa ’13, Reaction of a Biomimetic Molybdenum-Centered Complex with Carbon Dioxide
- Kasia Sierzputowska ’13.5, Using novel TALEN technology to engineer precise mutations in the genome of Drosophila melanogaster
- There are a few conferences that provide a platform for undergraduate research:
- National Collegiate Research Conference at Harvard (January)
- Northeast Undergraduate Reasearch and Development Symposium at the University of New England, Biddeford, ME (March)
- Sigma Xi Student Research Conference, Research Triangle Park, NC (November)
