Facilitating a First Readings Discussion

This workshop will equip First Readings seminar leaders with tools and strategies to facilitate thoughtful and productive discussion about Evicted, Brown’s 2018 First Readings book. Participants will learn techniques for creating a seminar environment conducive to discussion and develop strategies for starting, sustaining, and concluding a book discussion. This workshop will be offered twice and is appropriate for faculty and staff who will be facilitating a First Readings seminar. Preparing for the First Days of Class as a New Faculty Member or Postdoctoral Associate

This workshop, led by Sheridan Center Assistant Director Marc Lo, introduces strategies for engaging students during the first days of class. We will discuss techniques for fostering enthusiasm for course content, activities for gauging student learning, and explore ways to use feedback and reflection to become a more effective instructor. Ample time will be provided to discuss your teaching-related questions. This workshop is appropriate for faculty and postdocs who are new to teaching at Brown. Lunch will be provided beginning at 11:45am.

Writing a Teaching Statement

Many applications for faculty positions require a teaching statement/philosophy. This interactive workshop will draw on research about the use of teaching philosophies in academic job searches to identify constituents of an effective teaching statement. Participants will also gain tools to start drafting and enhancing their own statements.
