The goal of this workshop is to provide new instructors with ideas about how they can prepare and plan for their roles as instructors, including strategies for planning classes and engaging students, and suggestions for ways to use student feedback to become more effective teachers.

The Sheridan Teaching Seminar lecture on How We Learn will be held on November 30th from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Salomon 001 with a discussion following. The lecture is open to the Brown and RISD community. In this interactive lecture, Shawn Nordell, (Sheridan Center) will discuss recent research on learning and present strategies that improve learning and retention. Attendees will use this to create an interactive student learning experience for their teaching.

We will discuss how to design writing assignments that will help students meet your course goals and prepare them to produce quality writing in your discipline. This workshop is appropriate for faculty, postdocs, and graduate students in any discipline.
This workshop will help you develop a persuasive teaching philosophy statement that accurately describes you as an instructor and serves you well during the application/interview process and beyond.

The goal of this workshop if to help new instructors understand the challenges of grading and the importance of establishing and applying grading criteria. Participants will brainstorm approaches for establishing grading criteria within their disciplines and discuss the role of grading in student learning. Participants will learn strategies that will help them grade effectively and efficiently.
