Shuyuan (Joy) Liu is the Assistant Director of English Language Support at the Sheridan Center where she designs and manages programs and resources for international multilingual graduate students, supporting their linguistic and cultural needs in language and social transition, academic and professional writing, and development of intercultural oral communicative skills. As a practitioner-scholar specializing in graduate communication support and global Englishes, Joy loves working with diverse student populations, and values their language histories, cultural identities, and the rich linguistic assets (including Englishes!) they bring to the community.

Shuyuan (Joy) holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the Pennsylvania State University and an M.A. in Bilingual Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. At Penn State University, she served as an instructor and practicum supervisor for multilingual writing and academic speaking courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Drawing on Vygotskian sociocultural theory and the Global Englishes research paradigm, Joy’s dissertation project explores internationally mobile students’ communicative experiences, challenges and strategies in online and offline US university classroom settings. She serves as an Editorial Board Member with Elsevier’s Social Sciences & Humanities Open. Her recent first-authored publications are featured in venues such as Foreign Language Annals, Journal of Pragmatics, and International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism. Joy is committed to developing and translating her professional and research expertise into evidence-based advising and instructional support services for multilingual international students across disciplinary fields.
