Jessica Berry, Director of the Office of Sustainability


Jess is the Director of the Office of Sustainability and provides leadership and management across the University to enhance sustainability at Brown. She works closely with the Assistant Provost of Sustainability, and key stakeholders, to identify opportunities for integrating sustainability principles into University operations, including the development of a long-term Strategic Sustainability Plan. Jess has worked in the environmental field for over 15 years and holds a B.S. and M.S.  in Environmental Studies and Natural Resources. She can be found mountain biking, skiing, or in the Vermont mountains with her dog Denali.

Erin Royal, Sustainability Program Manager

In collaboration with departments across campus, Erin manages sustainability programming at Brown related to food and dining, transportation, waste, and more. She is currently focused on the implementation of Facilities Management's strategic waste improvement plan. Erin oversees the strategic development of student opportunities in sustainability on campus including the growth of the office's internship program, developing new marketing and communication platforms, and connecting the office with classes and academic programs on campus. Erin enjoys singing, hiking with her partner and golden retrievers, and relaxing with a good book.  She can also be found on the rugby pitch and volunteering with the service dog non-profit, Golden Opportunities for Independence.

Derek Wietsma, Sustainability Data Scientist


Derek is a data scientist with more than 6 years of experience. His skillset includes programming, machine learning, and data visualization. Most recently, Derek worked at MIT's Office of Sustainability, where he launched a data practice to track operational performance and support decision making. Prior to MIT, Derek worked as a contractor for the Department of Homeland Security analyzing trends in large volumes of international travel data. He received a Master of Public Affairs from Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Bloomington. He likes snowboarding, good coffee, and old western movies.  

Arthur (Dave) Larson, Senior Energy Engineer

As the Senior Energy Engineer, Dave serves as the primary energy engineer for all Planning, Design, and Construction (PD&C) projects and provides innovative and creative engineering solutions and guidance to Operations and PD&C in meeting Brown's High-Performance Design and energy-related standards and commitments.  He also provides leadership for the National Grid Strategic Energy Management incentive program. In his free time, Dave enjoys hiking, sailing, biking, canoeing, and yard-work.

Chinmay Patil, Energy Engineer

As an Energy Engineer, Chinmay provides an energy efficiency perspective to building-level commissioning activities. He gathers site information through work orders, utility data, and energy management system, and performs assessments to identify design and operational problems. He serves as a primary interface between Operations staff and the Office of Sustainability and identifies control system innovation to minimize building energy consumption. Chinmay holds a B.E. and M.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering and has prior experience in the field of energy efficiency. In his leisure time, he likes traveling, cooking, and watching TV.​

Stephen Meunier, Applications Engineer

Steve is an Applications Engineer with over two decades of Building Automation and related technologies experience. He assists energy engineers by implementing control programming strategies to correct any identified energy waste issues on campus. Steve also provides training to the trades staff to better understand the complex systems and control strategies seen in today's systems. When not working, Steve enjoys woodworking, cooking, learning new software, and keeping current on the latest technology. 

Joel Hernandez, Administrative Assistant


Joel assists the Office of Sustainability and Facilities Human Resources with various projects, event support, hiring, and other duties as needed to help both offices accomplish their goals.  Joel enjoys spending time with his family, taking his dog for walks, listening to music, and watching movies.

William Poole, Internship and Project Specialist

As the Internship and Project Specialist, William manages the office's undergraduate student intern team. He works with the Sustainability Manager and interns to develop and prioritize new projects, manage the day-to-day operations of the internship program, and provide mentorship to the office's students. William oversees the planning and implementation of our large student-facing programs including Green Move-in, Clean Break, and the compost volunteer program. He also manages the Office of Sustainability's social media accounts and collaborates with the Sustainability Manager to develop new marketing and communication content. Outside the office, William can be found exploring natural places with his trusty camera. He also enjoys a good chat about local restaurants, the music scene, and community events.
