News: Graduate, medical and other students walk through the Gates

With pandemic safety protocols in place, the students joined others to mark their official entry into the Brown community.

Walkthrough 2021 for Transfer, RUE, Brown-RISD Dual Degree, Graduate and Medical Students

For decades, students have marked the beginning of their academic journey at Brown by processing onto campus through the Van Wickle Gates at Opening Convocation. It is through this distinctive tradition that Brown students are welcomed into the community.

Watch transfer, resumed undergraduate education, Brown-RISD Dual Degree, graduate and medical students participate in this time-honored ritual at a socially distanced event held on Monday, March 1, 2021.

The event was open to students who are currently enrolled in Brown’s COVID-19 testing program. Those studying remotely who will be returning to campus at a later date will be invited to participate in a future walkthrough.

All students and their families are encouraged to celebrate on social media with #brownwelcome.

Socially distanced students, Van Wickle Gates Walkthrough — Participants in the March 1 event wore masks, maintained social distance and followed other public health protocols.

Dean of the Graduate School Andrew G. Campbell was among the administrators who cheered students on as they proceeded through the gates. Representatives from the College, Graduate School and Warren Alpert School of Medicine took shifts cheering students on during the procession.

Graduate students walk through the Van Wickle Gates — Typically held for all students following Opening Convocation, this year’s Van Wickle Gates Walkthrough was separated into two events due to the ongoing pandemic, to allow for social distancing.

Student at Van Wickle Gates Walkthrough — Leading onto the Quiet Green, the Van Wickle Gates open only twice a year: inward at Opening Convocation to welcome students into their academic journey at Brown, and outward at Commencement to mark the moment when students, degrees completed, leave campus.
