Intestinal metaplasia

A middle-aged man presented with upper abdominal pain. His gastric biopsy (H&E stain) shows intestinal metaplasia. Goblet

cells are present. Intestinal metaplasia may be the forerunner of dysplasia and carcinoma (linitis plastica). When the patient has

chronic gastritis as the result of H. Pylori infection the organisms are usually not seen in regions of intestinal metaplasia.
