Schistosomiasis (colon)

Schistosome eggs are demonstrated  in the lamina propria of colonic mucosa surrounded by an eosinophilic response.

A lateral spine on the egg is consistent with S. mansoni. In more advanced stages colonic inflammatory pseudopolyps

may form and involvement of the portal vein and pulmonary arteries may produce portal and pulmonary hypertension.
