Neuroendocrine carcinoma; non-small cell type (ovary)

This rare tumor was found in a 71 year old woman who presented with a pelvic mass and abdominal bloating. The mass, 9.5 x 5.0 x 5.0 cm, was solid and cystic and was confined to the left ovary. The tumor cells are arranged in islands, have high nuclear grade with brisk mitoses and necrosis.  The tumor cells are reactive to chromogranin (inset). These tumors are of higher grade than carcinoids.
