Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)

This microphoto is from an autopsy specimen of thymus in a young man with AIDS who died with multiple opportunistic infections. The thymus is markedly involuted with marked depletion of lymphocytes and epithelial elements. There is absence of Hassall’s corpuscles.

From the slide collection of the late Dr. Charles Kuhn.
