Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease

This section was photographed under a dissecting microscope. The “cysts” in this disorder are formed by cylindrically

dilated collecting tubules spanning cortex and medulla. Though the disease is usually lethal in the neonatal period, there are

infantile and juvenile forms with less severe renal involvement who escape the peril of early death from pulmonary hypoplasia.
