Multicystic disease

 

 

This photo depicts a multicystic kidney. Renal dysplasia may be predominantly cystic, as in this example, or may present as

a shriveled, fibrotic kidney with a few minute cysts. This is usually a unilateral condition presenting in an infant in whom a large mass

has been felt. Formerly removed surgically, they are now left to resolve spontaneously unless hypertension or infection is a factor.
