The Graduate Program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology sponsors two weekly seminar series: Brown Bag Lunches designed to facilitate interaction within the group, and a more formal colloquium series featuring speakers from outside the university. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Seminars This seminar series brings in outside speakers from around the world to generate interactions with our group. Speakers are selected by faculty and graduate students to complement research interests within the program SEMINAR SCHEDULE FOR SPRING 2007/2008 Seminars are MONDAYS at 12:00 in Sidney Frank Hall Life Sciences Building, Nathan Marcovitz Auditorium, Room #220, Meeting Street -- unless otherwise indicated: 1/28/08 Olivier Rieppel, MacArthur Curator of Fossil Reptiles- The Field Museum Chicago, IL, "The History of Evolutionary thought: Evolutionary theory and the problem of change." 2/4/08 Taylor Feild, Assistant Professor, University of Tennessee Knoxville, "The ecophysiology of early angiosperms." 2/11/08 Les Kaufman, Professor of Biology Boston University, "The Emperor's New Wet Suit: Science in Marine Conservation and Ecosystem-Based Adaptive Management." 2/18/08 Holiday 2/25/08 Kiisa Nishikawa, Regents’ Professor of Biology Northern Arizona University, "Neuromechanics of Ballistic Movements." 3/3/08 Adrien Finzi, Associate Professor, Boston University, "Nitrogen Limitation and Carbon Sequestration in Temperate Forests Exposed to Rising Concentration of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide." 3/10/08 Kathleen Donohue, Harvard University, "Season: What it means to a seed." 3/17/08 3/24/08 Spring Recess 3/31/08 4/7/08 Mike Kaspari, Associate Professor, Dept. of Zoology, University of Oklahoma, "Toward a biogeography of brown webs." 4/14/08 Brad Seibel, "Extreme animals, extreme environment: The biology of the giant squid, Dosidicus gigas in the oxygen minimum layer" 4/21/08 Jon Harrison, "tba" 4/28/08 Marisa Baskett, Postdoctoral Associate, National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, "Rapid evolution and marine conservation." Brown Bag Lunches - SPRING 2007-2008 Fridays, noon, Walter Hall - Room 102 (80 Waterman Street) This informal seminar series is intended to provide a vehicle for members of the program to share current research and problems in a relaxed atmosphere. It serves as a sounding board for the new research of both students and faculty and promotes collaboration and interactions within the program. 1/25/08 Johanna Schmitt, Professor - EEB "Adventures with Arabidopsis in the real world." 2/1/08 Regan Early, Post Doc - EEB, "The development of population-based conservation strategies for spatially dynamic species." 2/8/08 Amity Wilczek, Post Doc - EEB, "Variation at a single locus leads to changes in life history and climate space in Arabidopsis." 2/15/08 No Brown Bag Seminar 2/22/08 Nickolay Hristov, Post Doc - EEB, "The science of numbers: Colony size and population decline of Brazilian free-tailed bats using thermal imaging." 2/29/08 Joseph Bahlman,Ph D student - EEB, "3-D Glide Kinematics of Northern Flying Squirrels." 3/7/08 Shelby Hayhoe, Ph D student - EEB, "The sustainability and biogeochemistry of the soy industry in the Brazilian Amazon." 3/14/08 Gregory Sawicki, Post Doc - EEB, "Tendon elasticity influences the mechanics and energetics of muscle contraction: Insights from walking humans and isolated frog muscle-tendon." 3/21/08 No Brown Bag Seminar 3/28/08 No Brown Bag Seminar 4/4/08 Patrick Flight, Ph D student - EEB, "Intertidal microhabitats influence patterns of selection in the acorn barnacle." 4/11/08 Brown Bag- Senior Thesis 4/18/08 Brown Bag- Senior Thesis 4/25/08 Brown Bag- Senior Thesis In addition to seminars in the Graduate Program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, weekly seminars are held by several other graduate programs on campus. These frequently contain subjects of interest.
