Admission to the Department of Classics is highly competitive. Successful applicants will show significant promise of a productive career in humanistic scholarship based on a knowledge of Sanskrit. This promise will ordinarily be indicated by the prior successful study of Sanskrit and South Asian civilization, but in some cases it may be indicated by a student’s outstanding performance in the study of other languages and other cultures. Most students accepted into the program will have successfully completed at least two year’s study of Sanskrit. Strong students with less than two year’s study of Sanskrit may apply and may be considered. If accepted such a student will be required, as a condition of his or her enrollment in the program, to complete—and achieve a “high pass” in—a concentrated summer language course covering the whole of the first or second year of Sanskrit . Students are required to have a reading knowledge of either German or French to be admitted to the program and will need to take a reading exam in that language and achieve a “high pass” soon after their arrival (in the first semester).
