Psychology

Description

Psychology encompasses a range of phenomena and levels of analysis in pursuit of three goals: to deepen understanding of cognitive and neural mechanisms of sensation, perception, learning, and emotion; to probe the biological and evolutionary foundations of animal behavior; and to clarify the social perception and assessment of individuals and groups. The concentration offers an array of course options, including study in quantitative methods, laboratory techniques, and senior seminars on specialized topics. Students take upper-level courses in the field’s major sub-disciplines, including perception and cognition, behavioral neuroscience, and social psychology. The concentration in Psychology prepares students for careers in clinical psychology, business, policy-related research positions, law, and education. 

Student Goals

Students in this concentration will:

• Develop a foundation in the science of perception and cognition, as well as social, comparative, and developmental psychology
• Acquire expertise in at least one of the core areas of psychology
• Learn to formulate a scientific question
• Apply quantitative and other research methods
• Produce a piece of original research

Honors and Capstones

Concentrators are required to take an advanced level seminar in Psychology as a capstone experience.  The Honors Program in Psychology allows undergraduates to carry out an empirical research project under the direction of a faculty member. It should be developed by the student in consultation with his or her faculty sponsor during or prior to the student's sixth semester. The program also provides the opportunity for outstanding senior concentrators to receive their undergraduate degree with Honors in Psychology.
