Healed osteomyelitis

After the acute phase, chronic inflammatory cells infiltrate followed by fibroblasts and fibrosis. In the large photo, taken at the margin of involvement, unaffected bone and marrow are seen on the left and healed osteomyelitis with replacement fibrosis is seen on the right. The inset shows fibrosis at a higher magnification. In the earlier more active phase of repair, osteoclasts and osteoblasts were at work.
