Acute osteomyelitis

 

 

Pyogenic osteomyelitis may result from entrance of bacteria via the hematogenous route, contiguous spread, or traumatic introduction. These photos show acute osteomyelitis. The asterisks in the upper photo mark the location of the higher magnification photos below. Note infiltration with polymorphonuclear leukocytes and periosteal involvement. Abscesses can form in the subperiosteal region.
