Pinocchio shows courage and altruism when he resolves to sacrifice
his own ‘life’ to
save his “brothers-in-wood” Harlequin
in Chapter XI: “In that case I know where my duty lies.
Come gendarmes! Bind me and throw me on the flames there.” Shouldn’t
the Blue Fairy give the puppet a little more credit?
While the puppet shows
real human qualities in this instance, he also strengthens the
connection between he and the theatrical/make-believe
world by saving one of the most famous characters in the
world of puppetry from being set on fire, Harlequin.
