When Pinocchio goes to Mangiafoco’s puppet show in Chapter X, the reader is reminded of Pinocchio’s link to the theatrical world. The other marionettes recognize him and exclaim: “come and throw yourself into the arms of your brothers-in-wood!”

Pinocchio’s place in the world is made more ambiguous since the puppet has no strings working the movement of his arms, yet, being made entirely of wood, he is visibly different from the other audience members.

How much of a puppet is he, if his brothers and sisters are string-manipulated marionettes while he can move his own arms?
