Community Archaeology Day was quite a success. It brought together the student excavators, parents, and interested public audiences. Students were able to share their experiences, explain their methods and interpretations, and hear a variety of different perspectives from site visitors. This weekend also brought to the fore some of the issues the class discusses in section, such as how to present our information and interpretations to different audiences while being aware that ours are not the only interpretations available. Live discussions with visitors who relate to the site in very different ways than we do as excavators shows how the John Brown House remains an active part of the community today, and we are constantly trying to bring together our archaeological knowledge and the knowledges retained and shared by the audiences we encounter. One visitor, for example, provided very helpful insight into the drainage feature in Unit 2, arrived at through non-archaeological means. Below are a few photos that highlight how the class and those who came to visit interacted.
