Summary of JBH Unit 11:
This is a panel from the Lower Shelf of the Joukowsky Institute exhibit. Unit 11 has already been excavated from previous years and is located on the western part of the property, close to the fence that runs along Benefit Street. The previous class had found a double wall in this unit and was thought to be part of the Robert Hale Ives House. So this year, Unit 11 was reopened to continue further investigation on this double wall and to get a date on it. The team expanded the unit into a 2x3m, which what used to be a 1x1m that was adjoined to a 2x2m.
By the end of the semester, the team leveled out the unit and cleaned up the pathway between the two walls. As the walls and pathways became more visible, the structure of the walls and pathways were able to be investigated and understood more.
For more information of this unit, read Unit 11 Summary in the 2011 JBH Site Report.
These photos are the before and after shots of Unit 11. After taking out the backfill from the previous year, the picture on the left is how the unit looked in the beginning of the semester (September 26, 2011) and where the previous class had stopped. The one on the right is a picture of how Unit 11 looked right before we backfilled to end the semester's excavation. It is in this picture that one can see the double walls and pathway more clearly. If both pictures are compared one can see the progress and how deep this team has dug.
This picture captures the excavators of Unit 11 working deeply! From left to right we have Susana Ortega, Hannah Sisk, and Allison Barker. After using shovels to uncover this unit, they are now seen using trowels due to the gravel found in the middle section of the unit.
From left to right:
Bone (Unit 11, context 85), Semi-porcelain Fragment (Unit11, context 86), Semi-porcelain Fragments-blue and white patterns (Unit 11,context 84), Pearlware Fragment- blue and white pattern (Unit 11, context 84),Bottle Top (Unit 11, context 85), Greenish Black Bottle Base (Unit 11,context 86), and Decorated Brick (Unit 11, context 79)
For more information of each artifact please read the object biographies done by the excavators of Unit 11, where each student was assigned the chose of two artifacts to research upon. The artifacts were chosen for display due to its uniqueness and interest to the excavators of Unit 11.
