This was our last scheduled excavation session on the Quiet Green. It was an additional day that was added so that we could make up for the lost week due to Hurricane Sandy.  This day I continued working in QG1.  After opening the trench and removing the debris that had accumulated since last time we began troweling again in context 7.  This context, which we have been in for two weeks now, is characterized by grey tan-ish colored clay inclusions and a rocky matrix.  We also continued to find similar artifacts, including “pipe” ceramics and limited amounts of glass and ceramic.

We closed context 7 upon reaching more uniform tan/sandy clay in the soil, which we termed context 7.  We closed context 7 as we had before with the total station.  Context 8, besides a difference in soil composition, contained similar artifact finds.  We continued to find the “pipe” ceramic, glass, and small metal finds.  I noticed that while troweling there were lots of rust inclusions from metal that had corroded away.  Also the layer contained a few very large rocks.

By the end of the day when the sun was beginning to set and the temperature was dropping, we decided to suspend excavation.  We took final pictures and total station levels.  We labeled plastic bags with our trench number and field info and set them down to indicate where we ended. If anyone were to decide to excavate this spot again they would encounter these and be able to find info on our project.  We then back filled the trenches with the dirt we had excavated.  This concluded the excavation for this season. We will now move towards artifact analysis.
