Kuy Yeon's Project

What I did for this project was that since I'm not a huge fan of paper writing, I decided to drawing. I made couple sketches of architectural elements (too much to do the entire architecture) that reflected the Greek Past. Most of them were around campus.

Rochambeau House. I tried to like going here because it's such a beautiful building and even its surroundings are pretty, except that it's really really far... As some of us already know that this house, now used as French and Hispanic studies department, was actually owned by the French noble and later was given(?) to Brown French department. I've always like the exterior of the building (there's not much inside) and the entrance some how reminded me of "in antis" of Greek temples.

This is one of the columns of John Carter Library. I wanted to draw the entire pediment but too much. Even the top part of the column took me a lot of time. Corinthian style?

This was a part of the lamp post on the main green. I thought it reminded me of one of those natural/floral patters of Minoan frescos at the same time the decorations of fifth century/Helenistic. Not sure what they are called but I think Chris talked about it briefly yesterday when we were talking about the building ornaments. (Can anyone let me know?) Anyway, there were a lot of pretty lampposts around campus.

p.s. So I was at Philadelphia this weekend and happened to pass by the fine arts museum. I thought Chris mentioned this architecture briefly some time during the class so took some pictures (hoped I had fast hands to sketch them, but...). We were driving by on I76 but didn't get a chance to stop there, so the pictures are little blurry and not in a good shape. I didn't have time to visit this weekend since I was sketching and writing etc. But I really want to during thanksgiving break. Just thought these were great example of neo-classical building.

Michael Bohl: I really like how you did something unique for this project. You captured images of Greek architecture well in your pictures and I especially like the lamppost one because I had noticed the lampposts reminded me of Greek style earlier on in the year.

Carissa Racca: I really liked the use of your own drawings. In a way, it reminded me how we have adopted these Greek styles, but at the same time we have made them our own.

The lampposts featured at the JCBL are recreations of Etruscan candle sticks; this has yet to be proven.

Caitlin Howitt: amazing drawings, I'm really impressed! And I liked that you also added a little bit about the neoclassical outside of Providence. It would be really cool to compare the neoclassical in Philedelphia and Providence.

Harry Anastopulos: Your project seems almost like a travel log, which was certainly an important aspect of early re-discoveries of ancient Greek structures throughout history, as we know from both class lecture and readings (in particular, the Shanks book). Also, great sketches!
