All of the following texts contain the text of the Libretto in Italian, mixed with five accounts of Portuguese voyages to Africa and India and reprinted as Cum Priuilegio Paesi nouamente ritrouati e Nouo Mondo per Americo Vesputio Florentino intitulato (1507- abbr. Paesi), a work that by 1512 had been reprinted twice in Italian, in 1508 and 1512 in Milan, and had been translated and published in Latin in 1508, in Milan, in German in the same year in Nuremberg and in French in 1512 in Paris. If we include the “Princeps” edited by Nebrija in 1511, we can count at least eight editions of Peter Martyr’s De Orbe Novo in eight years. It is possible that the confusion about the authorship of Vespucci in Paesi resulted from the fact that in all the editions of this work the name of the Florentine navigator appears in the title. This was further complicated because the chronicles of travels included in Paesi have been ordered as chapters of the same work, for a total of 142 chapters. The draft from which these two early editions were copied, the translation made in 1501 by Angelo Trevisan, Secretary to the Venetian Ambassador to the Catholic Kings, Domenico Pisani, was not found until 1892, in the library of Mr. Sneyd of Newcastle, who had inherited it from his father, the Rev. Walter Sneyd of London. Berchet published it in 1892, in the Raccolta Colombiana.
