Lima’s university, chartered in 1551, was one of the first in the New World. It began its life as a small school under the control of the Dominican order, but Viceroy Francisco de Toledo transformed it into a larger, secular institution. These university ordinances date to a half-century after its founding. Now called the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, it remains a center of learning and the oldest continuously operating university in the Americas.
