Description:
Alexandre-Stanislas, baron de Wimpffen, was an explorer, born in Deux-Ponts in 1748; died in Paris in 1819. His brothers both were generals and he served as a captain under Count Rochambeau in 1781-1782. He was afterward stationed in the West Indies, but resigned in 1788. Besides the West Indies, he visited Mexico. In 1804 he secured an employment in the military household of Napoleon I, which he retained till 1814, when he retired. His book gives a history of Hispaniola, including its pre-Colombian history. He gives an overview of the commerce of Saint Domingue including a description of its industries, such as sugar and indigo manufactories.
