Description:
Marcus Rainsford’s work printed a year after Saint-Domingue officially became
Haiti, is a retrospective of the history of the island up until that time. The author’s
personal narrative contains 13 plates, which include some wonderful, dramatic,
and sometimes incendiary engravings by either J. Barlow or the author. The work
also includes an almost regal portrait of Toussaint Louverture and a facsimile of a
letter in French by Toussaint Louverture. Rainsford, who was a British military
officer, probably embellished his account in part. However, his work must have
been well received in Great Britain and elsewhere because it was printed in a
lavish quarto volume, with high quality engravings, and on good paper. The
engravings contained in this work are probably some of the most powerful among
the illustrative history of the Haitian revolution.
