Homeland Maps
Although the region pictured here is commonly known today as the "borderlands" because of the prominence of the present international border between the U.S. and Mexico, this boundary represents only the most recent way of organizing space in the region. Many other ways of inhabiting this landscape existed in the past, from the home territories of Apache bands and Tohono O'odham villages to the missions and presidios (forts) of the Spanish and Mexican periods.
