Dermatology

Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship

The Department of Dermatology at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University welcomes your interest in our program. The primary goal of our Department is to provide residents and students a superior educational and service experience in the discipline of Dermatology. Our faculty is committed to helping each trainee develop lifelong learning skills to achieve individual excellence in patient care, education, and research. As an integral part of our approach to your professional and personal growth, we place particular emphasis on upholding the qualities of respect, integrity, intellectual curiosity, good judgment, and patient sensitivity and advocacy - all to assure you are ready to confidently face the challenges that may appear long after your training is complete. We hope this will foster a sense of commitment to dermatology and will encourage our graduates to contribute some of their future time, knowledge and experience back to the field.

About Us

As a model of inter-institutional cooperation in the delivery of medical services and in medical education, our Department of Dermatology thrives by drawing from the combined resources of Brown University, the Brown affiliated hospitals, and the local community. Of special note is the broad demographic and ethnic diversity of our patient population (drawing from throughout Rhode Island, Southeastern Massachusetts, and Southeastern Connecticut) which enriches both the clinical and personal experience of learning here. Since the program’s beginning in 1969, over one hundred and thirty dermatologists have completed training here and practice or teach in locations throughout the United States.

Clinical Sites

Most of the clinical training of residents takes place in multiple hospitals located in Providence, Rhode Island, as well as at the Providence VA Medical Center. The combined bed capacity of the hospitals approaches 1,500. The total number of outpatient visits in Dermatology (excluding emergencies) exceeds 25,000/year. Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children's Hospital, and Women & Infants Hospital, located within walking distance of each other, form Southeastern New England's largest academic medical center. They provide the setting for General Dermatology Clinics, Pediatric Dermatology Clinics, the Inpatient Dermatology Service, the Photomedicine and Day Hospital Facility, the Dermatological Surgery Unit, the Dermatopathology Service, the Dermatopharmacology Unit, and many specialty clinics.
