  The Excavations of the Petra Great Temple are under the direction of Professor Martha Sharp Joukowsky, Brown University, Providence Rhode Island, U.S.A.

The staff is comprised of graduate students, students, technicians and research consultants.

We regret that there is simply no room for extra non-Brown volunteers.


2007 Team Members

In 2007 Brown University archaeologists included Martha Sharp Joukowsky, Director, Artemis W. Joukowsky, photographer,[2] and two supervisors served as most valued staff members, including Elizabeth Smolenski and Süreya Köprülü. Restoration efforts in the field were expertly undertaken by a work force of 20 devoted Bedouin, directed by Dakhilallah Qublan, Foreman. Aude and Ismaeen Qublan and Ali Wieri undertook the 2007 fieldwork.

2006 Team Members

Brown University archaeologists included Martha Sharp Joukowsky, Director, Artemis W. Joukowsky, photographer, and five supervisors served as most valued staff members, including Emma Susan Libonati, Marshall C. Agnew and Eleanor A. Power, (Surveyors), Tarek M. Khanachet, Christopher A. Tuttle and Arta Khakpour. Deirdre G. Barrett for the 11th year expertly processed the finds as our Registrar-Cataloguer and lamp analyst and Margaret O'Hea spent two weeks in Petra analyzing our glass. We were supported by a work force of 50 devoted Bedouin, directed by Dakhilallah Qublan, Foreman. The Great Temple site was completely surveyed and measured in 2006 by Head Surveyor, Marshall C. Agnew. In addition to measuring the entire temple complex—8500 survey points were taken, and Agnew also documented a detailed 3-D plan for publication and future reconstruction and prepared a plan for the conservation and protection of the Trench 126 Hypocaust System, endangered by being exposed to the elements.

Khanachet, and Christopher A. Tuttle. Deirdre G. Barrett expertly processed the finds as our Registrar-Cataloguer and lamp analyst, and Christian Augé analyzed our coins. We were supported by a work force of 50 devoted Bedouin, directed by Dakhilallah Qublan, Foreman. Rune Frederiksen spent two weeks at the site as our Theater Consultant. Our discussions revolved around the study and future publication of the Petra Great Temple Theater.
