Laboratory Resources
Laboratories of Molecular Medicine (LMM)
Expression/Purification
The laboratory has ample space and is equipped with modern protein production and purification instrumentation for sample production. Instrumentation includes -20/-80 freezers, Electrophoresis systems (DNA/protein), Eppendorf Mastercycler PCR gene amplification systems, Infors refrigerated incubator shakers for large-scale expression, Vertiga Micro-expression Device, GE Healthcare Akta Purifier, Beckman X-15 centrifuge, Avestin EmulsiFlex-C3 Cell Cracker, and Perkin-Elmer Lambda25 UV spectrophotometer. Windows-based PCs are available for all laboratory members for data analysis, graphic manipulation and report preparation.
X-ray Crystallography
A new Rigaku/MSC Micromax-007 X-ray generator (copper anode) with an R-axis-IV++ detector and X-stream cryosystem, installed December 2004, is available for in-house data collections. We also have the 'PUCK' robotic system for crystal storage and robotic screening at synchrotron beamlines, and a new Viscotek Dynamic Light Scattering Instrument for sample polydispersion measurements. Finally, two LINUX workstations (dual processor, intel P4), housed in a dedicated model-building room, are available for X-ray Crystallography data reduction, building and refinement (includes the programs HKL2000, CNS, O, CCP4, among others).

The laboratory is housed in the newly established Laboratories of Molecular Medicine (opened September 2004), with more than 750 sq. feet of individual wet laboratory space plus an additional room for computation work and a separate data collection facility. The crystallographers share a common laboratory space on the first floor, which is also the location of the new Rigaku/MSC Micromax-007 X-ray generator (copper anode) with an R-axis-IV++ detector and X-stream cryosystem. LMM building also has a state-of-the-art lecture hall, where multiple seminars are hosted each week, and central meeting and eating areas on each floor to facilitate interaction among the different groups.
