What is Google Scholar?

Google Scholar enables users to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web.

Support for Libraries

For libraries that make their resources available via a link resolver, Google is now offering the option to include a link for patrons to these resources as a part of the Google Scholar search results. Brown University uses SFX as its link resolver.

What does this mean for Brown?

On-campus users will see additional links in Google Scholar search results which facilitate access to our library's resources. These links lead to our SFX server which, in turn, directs users to the full-text of the article or further options for finding the article. Off campus users may indicate their affiliation with Brown by designating Brown University as their institution of choice in Scholar Preferences (see an example). Off campus users will still need to authenticate via proxy or VPN to view full text.

How it Works

Point your browser to http://scholar.google.com and run a search. In your search results you will find two kinds Brown University Library links. A more prominent link Find It @ Brown Full Text (see an example) on the same line as the link to the title of the retrieved article indicates full text is available and will open an SFX (FindIt) menu with a link to the text. A less prominent link Find It @ Brown (see an example) below the article citation indicates full text may not be available and opens an SFX (FindIt) menu with options for retrieving a copy of the article.
