WINTER 2007 & SPRING 2008 INTERNSHIPS
DEFENDING ASIAN AMERICAN VOTING RIGHTS
for Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law Students
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund
(AALDEF) protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans
through litigation, advocacy, and community education. Spring and
Winter internships are available for college, graduate, and law
students in AALDEF’s Voting Rights Program.
In prior elections, Asian Americans faced a series of
barriers in exercising their right to vote; for example, ballots have
been mistranslated listing Democratic candidates as Republicans and
vice versa, lack of interpreters, denial of language assistance, rude
and hostile poll workers. AALDEF’s Voting Rights Program aims to
enhance the political participation of Asian Americans and guard
against anti-Asian voter discrimination.
Voting Rights Interns work on the following:
o Advocate for full compliance with the Voting Rights
Act and federal Constitution, by analyzing election monitoring reports.
The Voting Rights Act mandates Chinese and Korean language voting
assistance and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination. This includes
legal research and writing, fact pattern development, and working with
clients and witnesses for possible litigation.
o Monitoring the Presidential Primary Elections in NY, NJ, MA, PA, MD
and VA to document the use of bilingual ballots.
o Assess local elections compliance with settlements reached in voting
rights lawsuits in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and other states.
o Registering new voters after citizenship swearing-in ceremonies.
o Conduct research and advocacy on local, state and federal election reform proposals.
Description of Fall Internships:
Supervision: Interns are supervised by attorneys through regular meetings and trainings.
Compensation: These internships are not paid positions, but academic credit can be arranged.
Hours: Interns work anywhere between 12 to 25 hours per week in the office.
Duration: Winter internships are during intersession and Spring
internships usually follows the spring semester, commencing with the
start of classes (end of January) to the first or second week of May.
To Apply:
Bilingual ability is helpful but not required. Students with language
ability in Korean, Bengali, Urdu, Punjabi, or Chinese are especially
welcome to apply and languages (if any) should be stated in the resume.
Applicants should also state the number of hours they can work per week and a possible schedule.

Political/Popular Education Curriculum Research Assistance Needed:
Would you like to research social justice organizations, anti-oppression
groups and community organizing efforts by surfing the web? You can help
a grassroots youth leader organization in Providence expand and deepen its
work by researching popular/political education and community organizing
training materials!
The Providence Youth Student Movement (PrYSM) is a youth organization
working for justice and power for the Providence Southeast Asian
American community. As one of the steps in creating a Political
Education/Popular Education curriculum, PrYSM wants to compile political
education workshop materials and political education exercises from
various community and educational organizations.
We need your help in creating a database of organizations for us to
contact. The database will include information related to Asian American
organizing, youth organizing projects, Anti-oppression groups, Popular
Education training and Community organizing training organizations,
Progressive Presses and Asian American Studies Departments, Refugee and
Immigrant Rights organizations and other organizations who might have
developed workshop materials related to our planned curriculum subjects.
Most research can be done on the web.
During the next phase of research and development of the
Political/Popular Education Curriculum we will be collecting articles,
films, poetry and music that can be used as part of the curriculum. The
construction of this database will allow us to easily send out
particular inquires to identify educational and resource material. The
database may also be used
in networking with other organizations and organizing projects to build
solidarity around PrYSM campaigns.
This volunteer position will take approximately 5-10 hours, but a longer
commitment is also appreciated.
If you have any questions and are interested in helping out please call
or email Camilo Viveiros. (Even if you only have a few hours to offer we
can use the help.)
