The objective of this work is to investigate, using novel potential energy landscape exploration techniques, the plastic deformation mechanisms as observed in a model two-dimensional amorphous solid. We focus our discussion on the variations in the fundamental character of the localized shear transformation zones that are observed due to variations in temperature, and strain rates ranging from very fast (i.e. those seen in molecular dynamics simulations), to those seen at experimentally-relevant time scales.
