We report the discovery of biological ferroelectricity in aortic walls by piezoresponse force microscopy. Furthermore, we show that biological ferroelectricity originates from elastins, and ferroelectric switching in aerial elastin is suppressed by glucose treatment. Direct experimental evidence of polarization switching will also be presented.
