Using multiscale modeling, we find that He is trapped at fcc/bcc interfaces in the form of sub-nanometer sized platelet-shaped clusters at misfit dislocation intersections (MDIs). The calculations reveal the mechanism of He “platelet-to-bubble” transformation in terms of He wetting of the interface allowing us to predict the maximum concentration of He that can be stored at interfaces in terms of interface structure. The stable storage of He at interfaces may provide the basis for the design of structural materials for fission and fusion reactors with increased resistance to He-induced degradation.
