We exploit mechanical instability and large deformation of 3D soft structures as a novel approach to design materials with tunable functionalities. Periodic soft materials are subjected to axial compression to undergo a transformation in their pattern. This shape change is found to induce auxetic behavior. Furthermore, we demonstrate through simulations the ability to tune the phononic band gaps of these 3D periodic metamaterials using the change in architecture induced by buckling.
