Storing energy electrochemically involves electronic and ionic processes and chemical transformation inside and at the interface of materials. For high capacity materials, mechanics plays an important role due to the large structure and volume change during ion insertion and extraction. Here I present exciting examples on designing nanostructures and their interfaces to realize high performance energy storage devices and on the understanding of mechanics in these nanostructures. Examples include nanostructured silicon anodes and sulfur cathodes.
