I will describe a simple yet rigorously derived continuum mathematical model that predicts polygonization observed in large multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The model is obtained as an asymptotic limit of a system of discrete atoms. The crucial feature of the continuum description is that it correctly accounts for weak nonlocal interactions. The model can be extended to describe other objects constructed of multiple layers of graphene.
