- printing of "Private" on cover is a visual cue that stimulates curiosity and primes the intellect of the reader
- rough texture on covers and inner pages (accentuates the sense of mystery and privacy)
- pages are very heavy; the turning of the page is a more tangible activity than usual
- use of dual printing: plain type inscribed on top of print of initial letter in handwriting
- size and thickness of paper affects the reader's relation to the page and puts emphasis on each individual page
