Avant-Oompah!

The weekly "Homegrown Product" spread of the Providence Phoenix provides a place for local musicians to speak to their vision and comment on their personal growth and histories. These weekly articles give readers a feel for the musician's style and act as an advertisement for upcoming shows. This particular issue of the Phoenix dedicates its cover to a homegrown-product-esque article, detailing the style and politics of What Cheer? Brigade, an avant-guard street band from Providence. The band is described as "the local flowering of a small yet significant musical subgenre... {which} puts a distinctive Providence touch on a broader anti-materialistic movement, combining an implicit social critique with the pure joy of a great sound."

Note: This cover story emphasizes the fact that the Phoenix, as a print publication, is constantly faced with the tricky task of describing music with words. Because Phoenix editors cannot play samples of What Cheer? Brigade for every individual who picks up a copy of the the paper, they must rely on the adequacy (or inadequacy?) of language.
