It's very ubiquity poses a challenge for thinking about the chair afresh.

There's a great deal to discuss about chairs, certainly. Chairs are symbols of power and authority, and yet they are used by almost every class (excepting the homeless, who are lucky to find benches). Aesthetics, ergonomics, etiquette, authority, democracy, comfort, culture, and a vast realm of design questions are all close by. But chairs remain physically and mentally under and behind us. They're obscured by their function.

So what should we do?
