I credit this issue of the Phoenix with pulling me further outside of the Brown Bubble in the final weeks of working on this project. In late November I was entirely absorbed by the task of compiling this wiki, and was giving no thought to issues beyond my to-do list and daily interactions with professors and peers. This cover story caught me off-guard with its detailed description of the financial crisis, which is currently having a serious impact on Providence in particular. I was struck by the article's approach: to pack as much information about resources for struggling families into one space as possible. The article serves as an informant for the outside reader, bringing Providence's struggle to the forefront. For the Providence resident it serves as a motivating force, encouraging readers to take advantage of all of the resources available to them (among them food pantries and health services for the uninsured).
