"Brolliology" - The science of the umbrella. Issues: problems, comfort, protection, royalty, parasol v. umbrella, cultures, fashion, survival, function, production,

The focus of my project is on the different ways people come into contact and interact with the Umbrella, and how the Umbrella has . It starts with brief, but thorough histories of The Umbrella from one era to the next and from civilization to civilization paying attention to the changes being made to it, its role and interaction with people. This background information is essential to understanding how The Umbrella's role, design and our interaction with it have evolved to become what it is known as now.

The major analysis will begin in Europe. Although many other facets of The Umbrella will be discussed, such as: design, function, the word itself, effects on popular culture and vice versa, Umbrella constrains on people vs. people's constraints on Umbrella, etc... these are all underlying themes of the overall scope of the project, whose main focus will be on the relationships people have formed with The Umbrella.

Emma Whitford: I'm interested in the whole idea of superstition and how it is attached to umbrellas. I personally actually find myself hesitating before opening one inside. Maybe that's just me? :-)
