Have a look at Jack Kelly's Gunpowder: Alchemy, Bombards, and Pyrotechnics : The History of the Explosive That Changed the World.


Posted at Oct 28/2008 01:42AM: Lindsay: I guess this concept is pretty basic, and you already touched upon it, but I find it fascinating that the bomb is created with the sole purpose of being destroyed (not just destroying other things, but destroying itself). Suicide bombers might be interesting to look into-- just like the bomb, their whole purpose is to self-destruct. Also, looking at the interactive timeline you posted, it strikes me as ironic that Nobel was in the business of bombs... especially as there is now the Nobel Peace Prize.

Last thing-- some bombs do more than destroy. Bombs used to make tunnels in mountains and canals (panama canal) are destructive in order to create something new and "improved"

chris witmore: Hi Gareth. You have obviously put a great deal of work into this project. It is an ambitious one. I really like how you incorporated Hughes into your section on Unpacking the Bomb.
